Former WRKO Programmer Harry Nelson Facing Serious Health & Financial Challenges

Nelson is one of radio's great programmers including stops at the legendary WRKO Boston and KFRC in San Francisco during the late 60s and the 70s.  According to Guy Zapoleon, a few weeks ago Nelson was diagnosed with a rare lung disease. He spent about two weeks in the intensive care unit. Although he has made some progress, and is now out of ICU, he will continue his hospital stay for an unspecified amount of time. When released, he will need at-home care.

One big problem for Nelson. He is without any medical insurance. Gerry Cagle has set up a fund for Nelson. Contributions to help Nelson out are tax deductible. If you're one of the many who Nelson has helped or inspired over the years or you would just like to help, you can send a check to Spirit & Word Ministries, Inc. 6201 E. Horseshoe Road, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253. In the memo section of your check, post "Harry Nelson Medical Fund." No amount is too small. Harry has not asked for this, his fellow broadcasters have taken it upon themselves to raise funds on his behalf.

Update from Shel Swartz, April 7, 2011:  I spoke with Harry this morning, at his home in Maine, where he had just returned from the hospital.  Because he had just been released, he is quite weak, but we assume he will eventually recover well.  Harry has asked those who know how to contact him, to please wait a few days before doing so, as he is yet unable to communicate well, by phone.  In other words, folks, give him time to recover.  Thanks!
