Charlie Fox January, 1972 to October, 1973
Real name: James Martin
The Santa Monica, California, related: "I was thrilled to work at legendary
stations like KHJ and KRLA. I wound up working with legendary jocks who, early
on, were heroes of mine. Talent like Robert W., Dave Diamond, "Humble Harve,"
Wolfman Jack and Dave Hull. I never felt that I belonged in that company but
maybe someday, in retrospect, I will."(Courtesy Don Barrett, laradio.com)
Today, he is retired and living in Las Vegas. In 2002, he sent me an email
to share with you: My time at WRKO, as well as CKLW and KDWB, prepared me, almost
by design, for a very long run in my hometown of Los Angeles at KFI KHJ KRLA
and a lotta years at what is now Westwood One. My two years at RKO came very
early in a three-decade-plus journey. I will always remember well my stint at
WRKO and the people I worked with.
On a personal level, I was going through some incredibly trying times while
doing afternoon drive at the giant that was The Big 68 and surviving them while
continuing to do good airwork taught me some invaluable lessons. I will
always remember fondly people like Scotty Brink..Johnny Williams (Bill Todd)..and
especially Chet Kelley who was my board op there . Chet was much older than
I and it became almost a father and son bond that we formed. I loved that guy.
Today I am 13 years into retirement and live a very quiet life occupying most
of my time with writing. I was very fortunate to have had the career I did and
will always remain grateful for it."
